7th Sep 14 I could no longer resist, having done nearly 7K miles, and with Santa Pod scheduled I just had to… Background I don’t have a big background in tuning vehicles. Whilst young and living in a farm community we always toyed with cars but mainly did the mechanical ‘tuning’ like putting a V8 in a VW Campervan, drove around the farm fields, bore out cylinders on bikes etc…Usual growing up stuff to me… When I bought my company Nissan Navara pickup truck I was longing for more and started looking into diesel tuning. I had the eBay type box which was impossible not to over fuel and kick the engine into safe mode, I moved up to a mid-range box which was effectively the same as the chip eBay box but with better packing and marketing 😉 And then when ready to give up I came across DTUK who were not only importing from DTE Systems in Germany but changing and modifying the maps on the boxes. They also had a Navara as a demo car and I had to try it…So I started with a common rail box, and then a couple months later I added the injector box to it as well (I think they do it as a single box solution these days)…With TuV approval, it was absolutely superb and stable. When I needed to tow my powerboat I noticed still a flat area at the bottom, and Andrew@DTUK invited me up and added a new map to my box which I then tailored to get the flat spot out….It was superb… So what to do with the Golf R; – A full remap – Another tuning box – And from who… I choose another tuning box, from personal experience I know they can work very well, and based upon many tens of thousands of personal miles driven I played it safe and went with the one that I know and trust with great UK support and fully tested to stringent German TuV standards. I went for the DTUK FSR system, which was delivered next day and I installed it yesterday. Got it at the new price of £399 see http://rforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=73& … 7a60f16ae9 Installation The installation is both very simple, and a pain in the backside. Only because I’m moaning, impatient and careful. The instructions are very clear and provide step by step guidance. The package includes the box, the wiring harness, a plug to use when removing the box and leaving the wiring in-place, a couple of cable ties, a mini torx screwdriver, and instruction. How ever simplistically speaking it is as follows; – Remove cover from engine (simply pops on so easy to pull off) – Locate the sensors to get a view of where you need to get to Boost sensor 1easy at top of engine at the front Boost sensor 2I doubt you can see that one, let alone reach it without jacking up the car, remove the plastic cover (just 8 screws and very easy), and it because visible from underneath Camshaft sensortowards the back of the engine block – Route your cabling loom around them, each sensor cable is neatly colour coordinated, and then towards the battery – Connect the positive and the negative cabling (look at the battery, VAG seems to put a cover on the negative terminal…) – Connect the box This really shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes unless like me you couldn’t get the plug off the second boost sensor and were feeling dumb and sorry for yourself 😉 Push it in a little bit more, remember that they seem to suck vacuum a little and just get it off… Anyway by this stage you should see a red LED on the box. I double checked the routing of the wiring loom, popped the cover back on, and screwed back in the plastic cover underneath the car. Optionally: Just to be certain I plugged my data logger in and checked the vehicle for readings and fault code when starting and all was fine. Job done! First Impressions So still all hot and sweaty, that was from the dog walk I had to do not the installation, I just had to take it for a spin. All fine, driving out of my road onto the main road I actually didn’t notice much difference to my normal drive in Race mode. All seemed well, but engine wasn’t fully heated up yet so I didn’t push it…. Then the oil temperature was reading over 90 degrees so I started pushing it. It was very very good but not earth shatteringly different. And guess what, dumbo here left the DPS into a normal for his wife the previous day :banghead: :banghead: So then I realised that normal felt like race 😀 so I switch the DPS to race and pardon my Dutch, but f**k me. My head hurt through the explosion of acceleration, this was more than insane, my ears hurt not from loudness but of the sudden movement and thrust forward. Sweet Jesus, this thing pulls and accelerates like there is no tomorrow. It is every so noticeable. Before I knew I was doing some serious 3 figure speeds. The standard standstill acceleration is mental, but what is even more impressive is the 40mph upwards rolling acceleration, the surge is just unbelievable. Yes you can also run it very normally. I’ve kept my data logger on, all seems absolutely fine….I went on a 80 mile errant, after a Shower I hasten to add, and felt most comfortable in DPS Normal with DSG in D. Where as before I was driving in DPS Race with DSG D/Manual. Race really feels like something very special now, something to save for the special occasions, something that takes this car into a whole new territory. What is next Impressions are great, I want facts and figures. So over the next period I’ll keep monitoring the vehicle, I’ll get it on the rolling road to get the facts out, and I’ll do some proper speed measurements. Watch this space…. Oh, I would welcome it if you can respect my wishes to not turn this thread into box vs remap, or insurance or what ever off-topic thread. We’ve had so many of those already. This is for real life experiences from those who actually have this equipment to those that are interested in it….Then again, if you are interested just get one it is really good! Oh nearly forgot, and then there is one more thing that I added….A bit more about that later
